Future Innovator STEAM Camp: A Partnership Between EDforTechAlliance, University of San Diego, and Logan Heights CDC

Fun and learning mixed together! The EDforTech Alliance, the EDforTech Corporation, and CoderZ partnered again in the Summer of 2023 to create a unique opportunity for Logan Heights Community Development Corporation in San Diego, CA. The Logan Heights Innovators Summer STEAM Camp was an interactive full-day camp over four weeks provided at no cost to San Diego Unified School District’s rising 2nd-6th graders. The San Diego Foundation provided funding. Camp participants enjoyed an academic experience that blends the fundamentals of computer science and, coding, and robotics with reading and math in a fun way. Hands-on activities were enhanced with experiential field trips and workshops with local industry representatives from STEM-related careers. EDforTech and Logan Heights CDC partnered with the beautiful University of San Diego this year to bring students to campus from Barrio Logan to experience STEAM learning at the university. Thanks go out to the Jacobson Technology Center at the University of San Diego for helping to facilitate this learning experience in classrooms in the SOLES Building on campus.

The photo below illustrates one of the hands-on activities the campers could participate in.  The campers learned about coding and creating a mission to Mars using the EDforTech Corp Codey Rocky Curriculum, where students learned the basics and applications of computer science. They worked in groups to build programs at each grade level to accomplish complex tasks while having loads of fun.

To add to the STEM Career experience the program included fun science projects, field trips, and STEM industry experiences (Northrop Grumman, Atomic Energy, US Navy, Midway Museum, Illuminate, Riverside County Office of Forensics, and Porpoise Robotics).

The STEAM camp culminated with a graduation ceremony on July 15th, where campers received Certificates of Award in Engineering Design and Computer Science from the University of California at San Diego Extension. Campers also earned a pre-college credit and now can see themselves as the next generation of engineers or scientists!

The Logan CDC STEAM camp was one of 91 programs funded by the San Diego Foundation.  This year was another bell ringer for a fantastic opportunity for the participating campers over the summer! Students are headed back to school with a new mindset! Are you looking for a STEAM camp for the winter break or summer?  Or would you like to integrate this learning experience into your school?
